Cinemark Sustainability

Cinemark cares about environmental sustainability in the communities we serve. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through implementing energy efficient measures, and by reducing waste through our co-mingled recycling programs.

We're proud of the progress we've made together with our customers and we'll con-tinue to look for ways to improve the recycling programs at our participating theatres.

In-Theatre Recycling Stations:

By installing recycling centers in participating theatres, we've made it easier for patrons to make a difference too! Did you know that Cinemark recycles Paper products, Plastics, Metals and Glass? Since 2012, Cinemark has recycled over thirty-three hundred tons of waste!

In Participating Theatres: Plastics, Cups and Popcorn Bags, 3D Glasses

Co-Mingled Recycling:

  • Paper Products: Newspaper, Magazines, Cardboard, Computer Paper, Junk Mail, Envelopes, Catalogs, Cereal and Dry Food Boxes, and Telephone Books
  • Plastics: All plastics PET#1 -#7
  • Metals: All aluminum and steel cans
  • Glass: All glass bottles and jars from food and beverages.
  • Cardboard only recycling: Cardboard Products

Energy Efficiency

Solar Energy:
Solar energy is the cleanest, most abundant renewable energy source available on the planet. Cinemark is harnessing the light and heat of the sun to reduce its carbon footprint by saving energy and money while powering its theatres with clean, sustainable energy.

Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Panels:
Installed on theatre roofs, PV panels directly produce electricity which can be used or stored.

Evaporative Cooling:
HVAC retrofits began in 2001. The new units were far more energy efficient and better at controlling humidity. We were able to realize extra savings by downsizing the overall tonnage of the units while not losing any of the comfort requirements. Each retrofit project was designed with the individual location in mind, instead of a one size fits all program.

Efficient Lighting:

  • Sconce Retrofit: 68W down to 12W bulb
  • Cold Cathode Retrofit: 11W down to 2W bulb
  • Canopy Retrofit: 25W down to 4W bulb and lamp # reduction
  • Auditorium Entrance Retrofit: 5OW down to 4W bulb
  • Variable Frequency Drive (VFD): What is a Variable Frequency Drive? An energy efficiency upgrade for a packaged rooftop air conditioning units. The blower fan operation is changed from "full-speed, all the time" to multiple "loadmatching" speeds, using a VFD. Matching the speed to the actual amount of cooling or heating needed reduces the energy used by the fan dramatically. It monitors your existing control system signals to the air conditioning unit in order to determine the fan blower motor speed necessary to properly cool or heat the area.

Future Projects

  • LEED Certification: Cinemark is working to build green theatres with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®). Learn more about LEED:
