Cinemark is committed to being a responsible member of the communities we serve, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. We have implemented energy efficient measures and reduced waste through our co-mingled recycling programs. We are proud of the work we do to reduce our carbon footprint, together with our customers and partners, and we look forward to continuing to strive to keep the big screen green.
In-Theatre Recycling Stations:
Cinemark’s in-theatre recycling stations make it easier for moviegoers to take a small step that makes a big difference! Since 2012, the company has recycled more than sixty thousand tons of waste, including paper products, plastics, metals and glass. In 2018 and 2019 alone, 25% of Cinemark’s waste was diverted from landfills by recycling.Cinemark is proud to partner with Organics Recycling at select theatres in California, Colorado and Texas to compost applicable waste.
As part of our ongoing initiative to help conserve natural resources, Cinemark is committed to using renewable energy. Cinemark is leveraging the power of the sun and the wind to reduce its carbon footprint by saving energy while powering its theatres with clean, sustainable energy.
In 2019, approximately 31% of Cinemark’s energy usage was offset with renewable options and is expected to grow to 75% in 2022.
Solar Energy:Cinemark is generating 6 – 7M Kilowatt hours per year through solar installations at 22 locations. That is enough power to show more than one million movies! Wind Energy:In 2018, Cinemark signed a multi-year agreement through 2027 with Trent Mesa Wind Farm for 10 megawatts of wind power capacity annually from 2018 to 2020 and 40 megawatts through 2027. This is the equivalent to the power consumption of approximately 120 of our theatres.
Energy Supply Contracts:Cinemark has secured contracts in deregulated markets, earning Renewable Energy Credits representing 65 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
Energy Storage:We have Battery storage systems installed at 6 locations to reduce building load during peak periods through 1.4 Megawatts of battery storage capacity.
Thermal Storage:Select locations in California and Massachusetts have thermal energy storage systems installed.
Electric Vehicle Charging:In collaboration with Volta, there are nearly 100 free EV charging stations in our parking lots, with a commitment to install more through an expanded partnership, allowing Through this relationship, Volta's EV charging stations have powered nearly 1.2 million electric miles for Cinemark customers. More than 27,000 gallons of gasoline have been saved, as well as approximately 53,500 pounds of CO2.
Lighting:Cinemark has updated a significant amount of its location lighting to LED in our theatres and parking lots. Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights are mercury free and produce no UV emissions, making them a more environmentally friendly light source.
LEED Ceritfied:Cinemark is working alongside the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC) to build green theatres that are up to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Currently, three theatres are LEED certified with one additional pending. Learn more about LEED: http://www.usgbc.org/leed
Energy Management:Cinemark utilizes an enterprise energy management system to control HVAC and lighting schedules, increase efficiency and reduce overall energy consumption.
HVAC:• Cinemark installed variable frequency drives in all of its eligible HVAC units to reduce energy consumption.• The company right-sized HVAC units to minimize energy consumption and reduce building kW demand.• Cinemark energy management systems control HVAC temperatures and schedules to ensure energy efficiency.
Water Conservation:Cinemark engages consumption monitoring to identify excessive water consumption at its buildings and utilizes water fixture and irrigation to help minimize overall water use.
