All the New Disney Movies Coming in 2020 and 2021

(Updated 09/23/2020)

There's a Disney movie for every audience. With Pixar, Marvel Studios, and the films coming out of Disney's own live-action and animated divisions, Walt Disney's enduring studio has the world of entertainment covered. While we saw schedule delays earlier this year, Disney will be back in theatres with SOUL in the fall, and has many more movies to come.

That's the year's second original Pixar movie, and next year we'll get a new look at one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. There will be more to announce for 2021, too, as Disney has some dates claimed for as-yet untitled movies. Some movies originally set for 2020 have moved to the following year as well. Here are all the new Disney movies in 2020 and 2021.

New Disney Movies in 2020: Pixar's Soul

Pixar's second movie of 2020 follows an aspiring musician who gets a dream gig, only to take a wrong step, which lands him in a version of the afterlife. In SOUL, Pixar explores the origins of all our passions, dreams and interests come from, in a quest to understand what makes all of us who we are. It's a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life's most important questions.

Raya and the Last Dragon

New Disney Movies in 2020: Raya and the Last Dragon

Disney's next big animated project is RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, which is directed by two FROZEN and BIG HERO 6 alums, Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins. CRAZY RICH ASIANS screenwriter Adele Lim provides the script. The story follows "a lone warrior named Raya, [who] teams up with a crew of misfits in a quest to find Sisu, the Last Dragon, and save their kingdom." Cassie Steele voices Raya, while Awkwafina voices Sisu. We don't know if anyone provides a voice for the intriguing turtle/sloth hybrid seen above, but we're eager to find out.

Black Widow

New Disney Movies in 2020: Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson's Russian super-spy finally gets her own solo movie in BLACK WIDOW! This movie is a flashback to the days after CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, and sees the hero reconciling with her past and facing off against the Taskmaster, a villain who adapts to any fighting style almost instantly. Jungle Cruise

New Disney Movies in 2020: Jungle Cruise

Inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride, Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE is an adventure-filled, Amazon-jungle expedition starring Dwayne Johnson as the charismatic riverboat captain and Emily Blunt as a determined explorer on a research mission. Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti co-star, while Jaume Collet-Serra directs. Learn more about the movie here!

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

New Marvel Movies: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

We’ve met Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme; now we get to see the Master of the Mystic Arts. Simi Liu stars as Shang-Chi, who in comics was originally the son of a Chinese crime lord named Fu Manchu. Expect a few backstory changes in this movie, however, which also has ties to the earliest Marvel Studios movies. The Ten Rings organization was mentioned way back in IRON MAN, and in IRON MAN 3 we saw Ben Kingsley's character masquerading as their leader, the Mandarin. This movie will introduce the real Mandarin, played by the great Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai (HARD BOILED, INFERNAL AFFAIRS).

The Beatles: Get Back

Movies With Great Soundtracks: The Beatles Get Back

In 2021 a major filmmaker will offer a new look at a band whose "great music" status is so far beyond question, they basically define the phrase. THE BEATLES: GET BACK features loads of never-before-seen footage of the legendary band's recording sessions for their final album — and the entirety of the band's iconic rooftop concert. With fully restored footage, director Peter Jackson — yes, the LORD OF THE RINGS filmmaker — gives us an unprecedented look at the biggest rock band in history.

New Disney Movies in 2020: Eternals

ETERNALS brings a brand new but very old family into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, the Eternals are an evolutionary offshoot of humanity, created millennia ago by an alien race known as the Celestials. They're tremendously powerful, and connected to the origins of both Thanos and the Infinity Stones. The plot of ETERNALS is still under wraps, but we understand the characters played by Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjani and Brian Tyree Henry will face off against a race known as the Deviants. Chloé Zhao, who made the acclaimed film THE RIDER, is directing.

Emma Stone as Cruella

Disney's CRUELLA will revolve, as you might guess, around the studio's legendary villain Cruella de Vil. Emma Stone plays the title role, under the direction of Craig Gillespie (I, TONYA) is directing. CRUELLA takes place in 1970s London, and Disney has led us to expect a punk rock influence on the character and story. (Punk was born in London in the '70s.) Both the original ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS and the live action remake 101 DALMATIANS were set in London, too. In fact, the '70s time period, and the fact that this is a live-action movie, all but confirm CRUELLA as a prequel to the 1996 version.
