Bill and Ted Are Ready to Rock Again!

Bill & Ted Face the Music: Everything You Need to Know

Bill & Ted Face the Music: Everything You Need to Know

(Updated 06/26/2020)

William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. and Theodore "Ted" Logan have traveled through history playing music and pulling notable figures forward in time. The characters originated by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in the 1989 movie BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE have saved their own high school careers, battled Death and evil robots, and created a utopia on Earth.

Or did they? Now in their 40s, Bill and Ted haven't yet written the music that will create a harmonious paradise. In BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC — you can call it BILL & TED 3 if you like — the alter-egos of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will embark upon a new musical adventure across time and space. Here's everything we know about the movie.

The Bill & Ted 3 Release Date

Bill and Ted 3 Poster and Release Date

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC comes to theatres on August 28 — almost 30 years after the release of BILL & TED'S BOGUS JOURNEY.

Watch the Bill & Ted 3 Trailer!

The first BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC trailer arrived on June 9, and you can watch it just above! The teaser sets out the story's primary conflict: That Wyld Stallyns, the band formed by Bill and Ted in high school, has failed to make its destined mark on humanity. In short, the band's music is supposed to unite all of humanity, but Bill and Ted haven't written a song that will do the job.

So, naturally, the time-traveling duo figures that a trip forward into the future will solve the problem. All they have to do is go to a time where they've already written the song, take it from themselves, and bring it back to the past. Shhh — no one tell Bill and Ted about time-travel paradoxes.

What's the Bill & Ted 3 Story?

Bill and Ted 3 Story

Time is catching up to our fun-loving heroes. Here's how Orion Pictures describes the story of the new sequel:

The stakes are higher than ever for the time-traveling exploits of William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. and Theodore "Ted" Logan. Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle aged best friends set out on a new adventure when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it. Along the way, they will be helped by their daughters, a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends - to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe.

The trailer fills in some gaps in that synopsis. We see Bill and Ted's "be excellent to each other!" schtick failing in front of some kind of authorities in the future, and they travel to some reality where they're both in prison for unknown offenses. We can only imagine how weird this adventure is going to get!

The Bill & Ted 3 Filmmakers

Bill and Ted 3 Director

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC is written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, who created the characters and wrote both of the previous movies in the series.

Dean Parisot (GALAXY QUEST) directs and Kevin Yagher, the makeup and effects wizard who worked on the first two Bill & Ted movies, is also on hand to create extensive prosthetic and makeup effects. In other words, despite the time between sequels, this should feel just like the two movies we know and love. The first BILL AND TED 3 trailer shows some fantastic full-body prosthetic work, which gives each of the stars a comedically prison-ready body.

Bill and Ted 3 Cast

You know that Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return to play the title characters. The medieval princesses, Joanna and Elizabeth, are now played by Jayma Mays and Erinn Hayes; Brigette Lundy-Paine (BOMBSHELL) plays Billie Logan, Ted and Elizabeth's daughter, while Samara Weaving (READY OR NOT) plays Thea Preston, Bill and Joanna's daughter.

(And, yep, Bill named his daughter after Ted and vice versa.)

William Sadler returns as Death, and while George Carlin's death in 2008 means we won't see his character, Rufus, the comedian's daughter, Kelly Carlin, will appear. Also in the BILL & TED 3 cast are Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Kristen Schaal, Anthony Carrigan, Jillian Bell, Holland Taylor, Beck Bennett, Hal Landon Jr. and Amy Stoch.
