This January, Robert Downey Jr. will set sail on the high seas in DOLITTLE. The Marvel superstar is taking on a role that was once even more famous than his Iron Man alter-ego: Doctor Dolittle, the famed fictional veterinarian who can talk to animals. Downey Jr. is joined by an all-star cast for this fantasy-adventure which puts a new twist on a familiar character, sending him on an unforgettable voyage accompanied by an assortment of animal friends. Join us as we take a closer look at all the familiar faces – and voices – joining Downey in the cast of DOLITTLE.
Robert Downey Jr., fresh off his legendary stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which climaxed with AVENGERS: ENDGAME, stars as Dr. John Dolittle, the famed British veterinarian who can speak with animals. DOLITTLE isn’t the first film based on the character, who appeared first in a series of classic children’s books. Rex Harrison portrayed the good doctor in the 1967 film DOCTOR DOLITTLE, and Eddie Murphy put a modern spin on the character in 1998’s DR. DOLITTLE (followed by a sequel).
But don't look at this as a DR DOLITTLE remake. RDJ's version of Dolittle has lived a life in isolation with his animals for several years, following the tragic death of his wife. But when Queen Victoria becomes very ill, Dolittle is forced to embark on an epic journey to find the mythical cure that will save her – joined, of course, by his trusty animal companions.
Beloved British actress Emma Thompson lends her voice to Polynesia, a treasured blue and gold macaw. Polynesia is Dolittle’s most trusted animal companion and the one he confides in the most.
BLOCKERS and PLAYING WITH FIRE star and former wrestling champ John Cena voices Yoshi, a cap-wearing polar bear who shares a name with the green dino familiar to fans of Nintendo's Mario. (The common name is just a coincidence, as far as we know; Yoshi is too good a name not to spread around!)
Don’t let that cutesy name fool you: Chee-Chee is a powerful gorilla, but he has a heart of gold. He’s voiced by Rami Malek, the Oscar-winning star of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, who also plays the villain in next year's James Bond sequel, NO TIME TO DIE.
Voiced by comedian and THE BIG SICK star Kumail Nanjiani, Plimpton is a cynical ostrich who often gets into arguments with Yoshi.
Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, known for her roles in THE HELP and MA, voices an anxious and energetic duck named Dab-Dab.
Perhaps the most exciting part about DOLITTLE is that it also gives fans an awesome Marvel reunion. Tom Holland (aka Spider-Man) voices Jip, the Doctor’s loyal, bespectacled pooch.
Rounding out the rest of the voice cast are Craig Robinson (“The Office”) as Fleming the mouse, Ralph Fiennes (SKYFALL) as Barry the tiger, Selena Gomez as Betsy the giraffe, Marion Cotillard (INCEPTION) as Tutu the fox, Carmen Ejogo (FANTASTIC BEASTS) as Regine the lioness, and Frances de la Tour (HARRY POTTER) as Ginko-Who-Soars.
DOLITTLE isn’t all animals – there are some fine human specimens in the cast as well, including rising star Jessie Buckley (HBO’s “Chernobyl”) as Queen Victoria, and Harry Collett (DUNKIRK) as Dolittle’s apprentice, Tommy Stubbins. They’re joined by Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, the great Jim Broadbent, and Ralph Ineson (THE WITCH) in a thrilling adventure that combines CGI animation with live-action for a DOLITTLE unlike any you’ve seen before.
