The Must-See Films of November 2019

The Must-See Movies of November 2019

The Must-See Films of November 2019

(10/28/2019)

We might as well call it New Movie November because this month is packed with awesome new releases. November brings the next chapter in the TERMINATOR franchise; a very classic-feeling murder-mystery from the director of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI; a surprising Stephen King adaptation; and so much more – like the return of CHARLIE’S ANGELS, a FROZEN sequel.

November 1

Terminator: Dark Fate

The Story: A direct sequel to the first two TERMINATOR movies, DARK FATE picks up 27 years after TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY as Sarah Connor teams up with an advanced cyborg and an old Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to protect the young woman who will one day save humanity.

Why We’re Excited: James Cameron, who directed the first two TERMINATOR movies, returns to produce this sequel, which ignores all the other sequels that came after TERMINATOR 2 – and makes it much easier to keep up with. In addition to the return of Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, DARK FATE features an awesome new cyborg played by Mackenzie Davis from “Halt and Catch Fire.”

Motherless Brooklyn

The Story: Edward Norton directed and stars in this 1950s-set crime drama about a private eye with Tourette's syndrome who investigates the murder of his mentor (Bruce Willis).

Why We’re Excited: Norton has been trying to bring MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN, his adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s acclaimed novel to the big screen for years, and he’s joined by a fantastic cast that includes Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin, and Willem Dafoe.

Harriet

The Story: This inspiring biographical drama follows the legendary Harriet Tubman, a woman who escaped slavery and devoted herself to freeing other slaves by forming the Underground Railroad.

Why We’re Excited: Cynthia Erivo wowed us with her performances in BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE and WIDOWS, and we can’t wait to see her take on the life of this American hero. HARRIET comes from Kasi Lemmons, who previously directed the acclaimed drama EVE’S BAYOU.

November 8

Doctor Sleep

The Story: Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, this sequel to THE SHINING centers on Danny Torrance, who is now an adult struggling with his psychic powers when he’s contacted by a young girl with the same gift. Danny reluctantly answers her call for help and is thrust into an epic battle with a supernatural cult.

Why We’re Excited: DOCTOR SLEEP is directed by Mike Flanagan, the man behind Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” and another great King adaptation, GERALD’S GAME. His latest stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, and pays homage to both versions of THE SHINING: King’s original novel, and the iconic 1980 horror film.

Last Christmas

The Story: During the holiday season, a young woman named Kate (“Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke) chafes in her job as an elf at a department store. But her life changes when she meets Tom, played by Henry Golding of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, and sparks fly between them.

Why We’re Excited: This romantic-comedy and holiday musical looks super charming, and for good reason: LAST CHRISTMAS is directed by Paul Feig of BRIDESMAIDS and A SIMPLE FAVOR fame, and it’s co-written by the great British actress Emma Thompson (who also co-stars) and her husband, Greg Wise.

Midway

The Story: The action-packed, epic war drama MIDWAY centers on the Battle of Midway during World War II, and the US Navy sailors and aviators who endured it.

Why We’re Excited: It’s the latest action epic from Roland Emmerich, who directed INDEPENDENCE DAY and WHITE HOUSE DOWN. His latest is packed with famous names you know and love, like Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, and Mandy Moore.

Honey Boy

The Story: HONEY BOY is based on a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, and is inspired by his own childhood and his troubled relationship with his father.

Why We’re Excited: LaBeouf plays his own father in the movie, with Noah Jupe (A QUIET PLACE) as the young version of the actor and Lucas Hedges (BOY ERASED) as the older version. The cast also includes faves like Natasha Lyonne, beloved singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, and Martin Starr.

November 15

Charlie’s Angels

The Story: Don’t call it a reboot: CHARLIE’S ANGELS resumes the story that began with the ’70s TV series and continued with two hit movies in the ’00s. This time, the action goes global as the Townsend Agency has taken its business international with a network of badass female super-spies.

Why We’re Excited: Kristen Stewart leads this modern trio of angels, which includes Naomi Scott (POWER RANGERS) and Ella Balinska. Together, they work for a new Bosley, played by Elizabeth Banks, who also directed this action-packed adventure.

Ford V. Ferrari

The Story: This biographical drama from director James Mangold (LOGAN) tells the story of the automotive designer and race car driver tasked with building a car for Henry Ford that could compete with Ferrari’s legendary – and seemingly unbeatable – race car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Why We’re Excited: Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby, the automotive designer who teams up with race car driver Ken Miles, played by Christian Bale, to take on this impossible task. It would probably be thrilling to watch these two do just about anything together, so the racing action in FORD V FERRARI should be particularly awesome.

Waves

The Story: A family coping with a horrible loss struggles to navigate life and letting go under the guidance of a controlling patriarch.

Why We’re Excited: The latest movie from Trey Edward Shults explores ideas similar to his last film (IT COMES AT NIGHT) through the lens of a powerful drama, with a cast that includes Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Alexa Demie (“Euphoria”).

November 22

Frozen 2

Frozen II

The Story: Elsa and Anna are (finally) back! They’re joined by friends Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf on a new journey to uncover the origins of Elsa’s powers to save their kingdom.

Why We’re Excited: FROZEN II is the sequel to one of the greatest animated Disney movies ever! What’s not to be excited about?

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

The Story: Children’s TV host Fred Rogers forms an unlikely but enduring friendship with a skeptical journalist in this wonderfully unconventional biographical drama.

Why We’re Excited: Tom Hanks playing Mister Rogers is simply the most perfect casting, and we know we’re gonna need a giant box of tissues for this one. Plus, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD is directed by Marielle Heller, the filmmaker behind last year’s brilliant CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

21 Bridges

The Story: A highly-skilled but disgraced NYPD detective shuts down all entry points to New York City (21 bridges, in total) to capture a pair of cop killers and restore his standing.

Why We’re Excited: 21 BRIDGES is an action-thriller starring BLACK PANTHER’s Chadwick Boseman, which is more than enough reason to buy a ticket. The supporting cast isn’t too shabby, either: Taylor Kitsch, J.K. Simmons, and Sienna Miller, to name a few.

November 27

Knives Out

The Story: Famous crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead of an apparent murder the night of his birthday, and his greedy family members are all suspects in this modern spin on the classic whodunit.

Why We’re Excited: Rian Johnson, whose credits include STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI and LOOPER, directed this entertaining murder mystery that’s filled with twists and boasts an excellent ensemble including Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, and Ana de Armas.

Queen & Slim

The Story: Queen (newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya, GET OUT) are enjoying a seemingly normal first date until a police officer pulls them over and turns their world upside down.

Why We’re Excited: QUEEN & SLIM looks incredible. The trailer alone is outstanding, but there are plenty of other reasons to look forward to this one: It was written by Lena Waithe (“The Chi”) and marks the directorial debut of the fiercely talented Melina Matsoukas, who has directed videos for Beyoncé, among other artists. The film co-stars Indya Moore (“Pose”), Chloe Sevigny, and musicians Flea and Sturgill Simpson.
