Onward: Exclusive Red Carpet Interviews With Chris Pratt and Tom Holland

What would you do to spend one more day with a lost loved one? In the suburban fantasy world of ONWARD, teenage elf brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot go on a perilous quest in order to have one chance to speak with their late father. The trick is: they have only 24 hours to make magic happen.

Pixar’s latest movie stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt — who have, of late, been most notable for their roles as Marvel superheroes — as Ian and Barley Lightfoot. Both actors have brothers in real life, and together they forged a brotherly bond of their own to help create animated magic on the big screen.

"I think we have a good on-screen and off-screen chemistry," Pratt told us at the world premiere for Onward. While actors for animated films typically record their voice tracks alone, Pratt and Holland spent time together in the voice booth. "We were trying to take some of that brotherhood that exists between he and I, and record it together so you can have that magic that happens only when two people are together in a room."

The magic in ONWARD was born from real-life inspiration according to the film's director and co-writer, Dan Scanlon. He and his brother can closely relate to the story of the Lightfoots.

"My father passed away when I was young, and my brother and I don’t remember him. We have questions of who he was, and how we would grow up to be like him. The dream of what if we could meet him for a day, what would we say, what would he think."

When he and his brother were teenagers, Scanlon's aunt gave the young men a brief audio recording of their father, which is similar to what sets off the magical quest for Ian and Barley in ONWARD.

"We knew how important this was to Dan, and what a personal story this was for him," Holland said. "We just wanted to make sure we did justice and brought this story to life in the most real way for him, and he told us recently that he showed the film to his brother and got the best reaction, so the fact that we could be involved in that was amazing."
