The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run: Everything You Need to Know

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run: Everything You Need to Know

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants! Our favorite guileless yellow sea creature, voiced by Tom Kenny, returns to the big screen with this year’s THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN. This is SpongeBob like you’ve never seen him before, in an all-new adventure that sees him searching for his beloved pet snail Gary (also voiced by Kenny) and taking audiences back to where his story began in the first place.

The Sponge on the Run Release Date

The Sponge on the Run Release Date

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN is set to open July 31, 2020. That puts the new SpongeBob movie in theatres five years after the last film, SPONGE OUT OF WATER.

The first thing you’ll notice is that SpongeBob and the gang (including Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy) look a little different in this movie. SPONGE ON THE RUN is the first time the Bikini Bottom denizens have been rendered in completely 3D computer animation.

Previously, in the original TV series and the two earlier movies, SpongeBob has been brought to life via traditional 2D animation. This time the animation was done by Mikros Image, a European studio that provided similarly stylized (and adorable) animation for DreamWorks Animation’s CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS movie. For a franchise that has been around as long as this one (more than 20 years!), the new designs give the property a chance to feel new all over again while maintaining everything that made the characters so appealing in the first place.

The Sponge on the Run Cast

The Sponge on the Run Cast

A big factor in maintaining the classic SPONGEBOB feel is the presence of regular voice actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob) and Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick). In fact, the entire familiar cast took part in SPONGE ON THE RUN, from Roger Bumpass (Squidward) and Clancy Brown (Eugene H. Krabs) to Mr. Lawrence, Jill Talley, Carolyn Lawrence, Mary Jo Catlett and Lori Alan, all of whom reprise fan-favorite roles.

Some pretty heavy celebrity hitters also join the fun for this entry, including Awkwafina, Reggie Watts and Snoop Dogg (who plays himself, naturally). Considering that, the movie sees SpongeBob and Patrick travel to the Lost City of Atlantic City, we can only imagine what colorful new characters some of these actors will play.

And then there's Keanu Reeves, who appears in SPONGE ON THE RUN as a wise sage who actually lives in a sagebrush. What’s funnier than SpongeBob and Patrick conversing with the disembodied head of Keanu Reeves? Not much.

One aspect of the SPONGE ON THE RUN story is a look back at the beginning of the friendship between SpongeBob and Gary. The trailer suggests that they met while SpongeBob was away at Camp Coral summer camp. We've never seen this period of SpongeBob’s life before, and it should be a hoot. The sequence must be really cute since, Nickelodeon has a spin-off series, "Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years" set to debut after the movie opens. Just think about how cute little Gary will be!

There Will Be Original Songs

New SpongeBob Movie Songs

While it’s unclear if SPONGE ON THE RUN will be an out-and-out musical, this new movie will definitely have some killer tunes. Pop superstar Cyndi Lauper and her co-writer Bob Hyman, who contributed to the outrageously fun, Tony-nominated "SpongeBob Musical" on Broadway, will contribute new, original songs to the movie. Ali Dee Theodore is also tapped to provide an original song for the film and the cast (both old and new) have undeniable musical talent. So it would not surprise us if the movie is even more musical than you’d imagine. See SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN in movie theatres July 31st!
