What Does “PG-13” Mean?
PG-13 stands for Parents Strongly Cautioned. It means some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. PG-13 movies can include stronger language, more intense action, or mature themes compared to PG films.
Why This Rating Matters for Parents
The PG-13 rating is where the MPAA system perhaps starts to become most helpful to parents deciding on whether to let their kids see a movie. The popular rating can be interpreted many ways: Definitely not for little kids; possibly too mature for your middle-schooler; maybe too crass for Grandma; likely OK for a high school field trip. But, as with PG movies, there’s a lot of subjectivity at play, and pretty much all categories of mature content—violence, strong language, sexual situations, terror, et al—could be present, even if only briefly. Parents, do what feels right.
The PG-13 rating is the most common rating for blockbuster films today.
