Once upon a time, there was an assassin. Not just any assassin. This was the most feared and legendary assassin in the land, a boogeyman among his peers. One day, the assassin fell in love and decided to put away his guns forever. Sadly, his happiness was not meant to last, as a terminal illness took his love away from him.
Before she died, the assassin's wife gifted him with an adorable puppy to help ease his loneliness and deliver some purpose to his now-empty existence. This, too, was not to last. Fate stepped in yet again when some dirtbags killed that dog, leaving the assassin no choice but to rejoin his old life and exact revenge. Which he did. A lot.
But that old life has a way of holding on tight, and to get back out of it, the assassin must sink further and further into its infrastructure and levels of power, a journey that may very well end what remains of his life. Welcome to the story of John Wick.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER FOUR will open exclusively in movie theatres on March 24.
It’s been a long road for JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4. When the previous entry, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM, took the world by storm, a plan was made to immediately get back into the game with not just one but two sequels shot back-to-back. The combination of COVID and Keanu Reeves’ MATRIX RESURRECTIONS obligations changed things. But now Wick's return is almost here.
The first JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 trailer set up the main story in the movie: Wick (Keanu Reeves) finds that there might be a way to defeat the High Table, that cabal which lords over the underworld. But it requires facing off against a new enemy who has a lot of powerful friends, and the power to sway Wick's old friends to the enemy's side.
This new CHAPTER 4 trailer focuses almost entirely on the action, which is as it should be. You'll get a sketch of the story — and a good look at Wick's new dog.
We outlined most of the story just above. But to recap: When we last saw John Wick, he and his closest ally, Winston, had both been ordered to kill one another in order to make peace with the High Table. Winston shoots but does not kill Wick, who is taken to The Bowrey King, ruler of New York's literal underworld.
Now Wick, the Bowery King, and presumably Winston all want to see the High Table destroyed.
Keanu Reeves returns to play John Wick, of course. And basically everyone else is returning as well. Ian McShane (DEADWOOD) is back as Winston. Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX) is back as The Bowery King. Lance Reddick will return as Charon.
Bill Skarsgård appears as Wick's primary obstacle, even though we know that Donnie Yen's character will be his toughest challenge.
And then there are the new cast members, all of whom should make action fans very excited. It’s a list that, in addition to the two actors mentioned above, also features Scott Adkins (DOCTOR STRANGE), Clancy Brown (HIGHLANDER), and Hiroyuki Sanada (THE WOLVERINE).
If you like the previous JOHN WICK films, you’re going to be in good hands with this one. Chad Stahelski returns yet again to manage all the wild action the series can throw at us. He hasn’t failed yet, and it’s unlikely he’s going to start now. So get ready for another round with everyone’s favorite dog-loving assassin.
