All the New Movies in Theaters for Christmas 2020

11/12/2020 • 3 min read

Love holiday movies, or at least watching movies during the holidays? We do! Whether it's a wide-eyed musical, an animated adventure, or even a horror film with a touch of December chill, these films help set the mood for the end of the year.

Fortunately, there are quite a few good choices to see on the big screen this December, with an array of action, sci-fi, and horror, and one of the best new documentaries to come around in quite a while. Here are all the best new movies coming to theaters for Christmas 2020.

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot and Chris Pine don't merely return in this sequel to WONDER WOMAN; they bring the action decades forward from the World War I setting of the original movie to, as the title says, 1984. The Cold War is on and a new media figure/business tycoon, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) seems to be ready to grant wishes. Is that how meek archaeologist Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig) becomes a supervillain? Is it how Steve Trevor (Pine) is back in the life of Wonder Woman (Gadot)? Maybe! Will the action and visual design be as flashy and fun as the pop culture of the mid-1980s? Definitely.

News of the World

Tom Hanks and newcomer Helena Zengel co-star in a Western story of adventure and friendship. Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Civil War vet who travels to remote towns to deliver news from the outside world. Zengel plays Johanna, an orphaned girl who was taken by the Kiowa years before. Kidd is meant to deliver her to the girl's aunt and uncle in Texas, but Johanna has other ideas.

Promising Young Woman

"Killing Eve" writer and showrunner Emerald Fennell writes and directs this black comedy tinged with horror. (Or is the formula the other way around?) Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was always called "a promising young woman" until a mysterious event abruptly threw her life and career off the rails. But there's more to the smart and cunning Cassie than meets the eye, and she is ready to address the thing that went wrong in her life — violently.

Monster Hunter

It's a genre-heavy Christmas this year as the horror of PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN is matched by the sci-fi action of this video game adaptation. The Capcom-published games of the same name give MONSTER HUNTER its foundation. US Army Ranger Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her elite unit somehow pass through a portal and into a world where giant monsters rule the land. They survive with the help of a man (Tony Jaa) skilled at fighting monsters but have to make their way home. Jovovich's RESIDENT EVIL partner Paul W.S. Anderson directs.
