While summer isn't officially here as we write this, the summer movie season is already kicking into high gear. The weather is hot, but the movies are hotter! With animated sequels, superhero adventures, horror, and rock 'n' roll, there’s a little something for everyone at the movies this summer.

When 4th of July rolls around, we will almost have too many great movies to see over the holiday weekend. Start making your Independence Day 2022 plans now — here are all the new movies that will be in theaters 4th of July weekend.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Taika Waititi, director, co-writer and co-star of THOR: RAGNAROK, returns with a new chapter in the thunder god's saga. Following the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Thor attempts to find inner peace. His meditations are interrupted by a new threat named Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), whose goal is to live up to his name. To defeat him, Thor will need all the help he can get from Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) – who just happens to be the new Mighty Thor. Talk about awkward!

Fire of Love

This hot new documentary examines the lives of volcanologists and lovers Maurice and Katia Krafft. We see the passion they brought to science and to their relationship as the two uncover the mysteries of volcanoes and capture breathtaking images. [Opens Limited]

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Our favorite ragtag team of bug-eyed yellow blobs has returned to wreak mischief and mayhem in the sequel to 2015’s MINIONS. THE RISE OF GRU follows, yes, Gru (Steve Carrell) as a young villain-to-be in the 1970s suburbs. He hopes to become part of a supervillain team known as the Vicious 6. But the bad guys aren't interested. Soon, Gru, with ample help from the Minions, finds himself at odds with the very team he wished to join. They're the most dangerous villains in the world… but they don't have Minions.

Lightyear

Learn the origin story of Pixar's best-known space cadet toy. LIGHTYEAR is basically the movie that inspired Andy's toy. It follows the "real" Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans) as the spaceman is stranded on a dangerous planet millions of light years from Earth. With the help of a small crew, Buzz must find his way back home, through infinity and beyond. But it’s not going to be an easy task – they must contend with the evil Zurg and his army of brutal robots.

The Black Phone

Acclaimed horror director Scott Derrickson's new nightmare stars Ethan Hawke as a creepy, masked child kidnapper. He's a monster who traps his victims in a windowless, soundproof basement with only a disconnected black phone attached to the wall. But when Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) is taken, he realizes he can hear the voices of the previous victims through the phone – and those voices are determined to help Finney escape.

Elvis

The story of the king of rock ‘n’ roll is told by Baz Luhrmann, the visionary director of MOULIN ROUGE!. Austin Butler stars as the rock icon while Tom Hanks appears as his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. This flashy, fast-paced biopic chronicles the life of Elvis Presley from his humble beginnings to his days as a rock ‘n’ roll legend and movie star, all the while detailing his complicated relationship with Parker.
