5 Reasons We're Excited for The Batman

10/28/2020 • 4 min read

There is no limit to how many Batmen we’d like to see on the big screen. So while we are excited to see Ben Affleck (not to mention Michael Keaton) don the cape and cowl again for the Flash movie, we are also super pumped - maybe even more pumped - to see what Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves are up to with THE BATMAN.

Here are five reasons why we can't wait to see this particular Dark Knight do-over.

Robert Pattinson

All kinds of Batmen have appeared on the silver screen, but we've never seen a youthful one. Even Christian Bale’s take on Batman’s first days, in BATMAN BEGINS, felt like a new career move for an already fully established adult.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman seems different. He's younger, perhaps less world-weary and more vulnerable. This is going to be a totally new and original cinematic take on the Dark Knight, and an especially fresh one after Ben Affleck’s older, more grizzled version of the character.

The Villains

Villains teaming up against Batman has been a series mainstay going all the way back to the 1960s Adam West film, which featured Catwoman, Joker, Penguin and the Riddler all hanging out and having a blast together. Even THE DARK KNIGHT, which is undeniably Joker’s film, made time for Two-Face.

We know THE BATMAN will have at least three villains: The Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman, though in the case of Catwoman, you never know how villainous she’s going to be. We can probably count on evil deeds from the other two, however. Based on the trailer, these aren’t going to be cartoonish depictions but rather more grounded, realistic takes on the classic baddies similar to Liam Neeson’s Ra’s al Ghul in BATMAN BEGINS.

Detective Work

Sometimes you watch a movie trailer a hundred times and make mountains out of molehills. That kind of thing is what being a movie nerd is all about.

So here it goes: In the BATMAN trailer, we see bits from a crime scene investigation featuring both Batman and Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright). This seems to indicate the two already have a working relationship with each other. That in and of itself is exciting, but it also indicates Batman may actually aid these investigations with his detective skills. Batman’s prowess as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes is one aspect of his character most films have underutilized. Here’s hoping THE BATMAN finally brings it front and center.

Director Matt Reeves

A lot of directors probably dream of getting their own Batman movie. Matt Reeves is one of the few who actually deserves the job. Look at his past work: CLOVERFIELD, LET ME IN, WAR FOR and DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Reeves always honors his pulpy influences by treating them with a far more serious approach.

This won’t be an R-rated Batman film, but it’ll be right on that line. It will also likely have strong themes and action scenes as well. Matt Reeves knows what he’s doing with this stuff.

That Cast

The trailer is shy about showing faces, but we know they're here. Paul Dano as the Riddler. Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. Zoë Kravitz (above) as Catwoman. We could keep going.

THE BATMAN is not only stacked with great actors... it is stacked with great actors who match their roles in interesting, fresh ways we cannot wait to see. On top of all that, you have Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. It’s gonna be quite a show.
