Wes Anderson's Asteroid City Is Coming and the Cast Is Amazing

8/1/2022 • 4 min read

Wes Anderson releases a new movie only every three years or so, which means that each new film is an event. His previous movie, THE FRENCH DISPATCH, was one of the earlier victims of the pandemic. The movie was planned for a July 2020 release in the US but did not arrive until October 2021. Things being what they were at the time, it's possible that many people missed it. Fortunately, that's not going to be the case with his new movie, ASTEROID CITY.

The better news is that ASTEROID CITY has already been filmed. Production began almost a year ago, and we expect to see the movie later this year. ASTEROID CITY follows a large set of students and parents who gather for a Junior Stargazer convention in 1955. The cast is wonderful, and with the story set in a desert town, we expect some new iconic images and characters from Anderson. Here's what we know about ASTEROID CITY.

What Is Wes Anderson's Asteroid City About?

Right now we don't have too many details about the story in ASTEROID CITY. Focus Features describes the movie as "a poetic meditation on the meaning of life. It tells the story of a fictional American desert town circa 1955 and its Junior Stargazer convention, which brings together students and parents from across the country for scholarly competition, rest/recreation, comedy, drama, romance, and more."

Based on that info, we can guess that, in addition to playing parents, students, and teachers, some of the cast members will play an array of uniquely quirky and unusual characters. In other words, this will be a Wes Anderson movie.

Anderson scripted the movie, based on a story he wrote with Roman Coppola.

When Can We See Asteroid City?

While we know that Focus Features will release ASTEROID CITY exclusively in movie theatres, we do not have a release date. That said, since the movie finished filming some time ago, we expect it to debut at one of the big fall festivals — either Venice or Toronto — with a release to follow in the United States.

Is There an Asteroid City Trailer?

There is no trailer for ASTEROID CITY right now. If our assumption above proves to be correct then the movie will be announced as part of a festival lineup, then we'll get a poster and release date, and then a trailer. We probably do not have long to wait!

The Cast of Asteroid City

At this point, one of the most entertaining aspects of a new Wes Anderson movie is the ensemble cast he assembles for each project. Anderson has outdone himself this time with a collection of returning regulars and new faces. Fisher Stevens, who plays a role, called it "probably the best, the wildest cast since THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI."

First up, ASTEROID CITY finally puts Tom Hanks in a Wes Anderson movie. His role is said to be a small one, but anyone who has seen a few of Anderson's movies knows that the size of the role, in terms of running time, has nothing to do with how memorable or entertaining it might be.

The rest of the cast includes Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Margot Robbie, Rupert Friend, Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Hope Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jeffrey Wright, Liev Schreiber, Tony Revolori, and Matt Dillon. Also involved are Sophia Lillis, Steve Park, Maya Hawke, Jake Ryan, Ethan Josh Lee, Edward Norton, Steve Carell, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, and Rita Wilson. Spectacular!

The only sad thing to report here is that while Bill Murray was originally set to be part of the cast, a case of Covid forced him to drop out before he was able to film his scenes.

Asteroid City Filmed in Spain

Fittingly for a period story set in an American desert town, ASTEROID CITY was filmed in Spain. (As were many Euro Westerns in the '60s and '70s.) The original plan was to film in Rome, but the pandemic forced some changes. Still, it might have all been for the best. The cast stayed together in a hotel that had once been a monastery, and Adrien Brody said that it felt like being "in an actors’ summer camp." All of which sounds like a lovely experience for the cast and crew, and one that hopefully carries across on screen.
