To the Edge of the Universe: Great New Sci-Fi Films

(02/07/2020)

The beauty of science fiction is that the genre can tell a wide variety of stories. Sci-fi is a huge umbrella that covers thoughtful tales about our place in the universe, and fast-paced action-adventures full of killer robots and mystic powers. It's a way to go to entirely new worlds through bold storytelling. Fortunately, new movies are coming in the next few months that fit those descriptions, and several more besides.

Here are the best new science fiction movies coming to theaters.

Bloodshot

In BLOODSHOT, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a slain soldier who is brought back to life by a corporation which "gifts" him with nanotechnology implants that deliver spectacular new upgrades. He becomes an unstoppable force –stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. The nanotech in his veins gives the company control over Ray's body… and his mind and memories, too. Soon, Ray doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not, but powered by his new abilities he's going to stop at nothing to find out. Based on the comic books from Valiant Comics. [February 21]

Christopher Nolan’s TENET is an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage. Nolan wrote and directed the film, and utilized a mixture of IMAX® and 70mm film to bring the story to the screen. TENET stars John David Washington and also features Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, with Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh. [August 12]

Free Guy

Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, a friendly bank teller who always seems to be caught in the middle of an epic crime spree or bizarrely high-tech battle. Then he realizes he's a non-player character in a video game called "Free City." When Guy meets Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer, of "Killing Eve") he becomes aware of the game world around him, and begins to compete as a player. Think of it like a live-action LEGO MOVIE that is spiced up with ideas from "Grand Theft Auto" and "Fortnite," and finished off with Reynolds' signature sense of humor. [December 11]

Monster Problems

This is Mad Max-style science fiction! Dylan O’Brien (seen above in MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE) stars in this coming of age story as Joel Dawson, a young man living in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters. Michael Rooker co-stars as Clyde, a monster hunter who helps Joel survive. Jessica Henwick, Arianna Greenblatt, and Dan Ewing also appear, with Michael Matthews (FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLES) directing. [February 12, 2021]
