The summer movie season is halfway over for 2022, which means that prime action movie season is also flying by. But even beyond the summer, 2022 has a lot in store for us when it comes to punches and explosions and general cinematic spectacle, including the return of what some consider the biggest action franchise of all time.
Let’s take a look at what’s in store for fans — here are the new action movies to watch in theatres.
Fortunately, we didn't have to wait for great action movies! Here are some terrific films that are in theatres now.
It’s been over three decades since Tom Cruise blazed across the sky in TOP GUN. But MAVERICK launched as a monster hit this past spring — and now it is back in theatres for a fan appreciation weekend, with bonus content, from August 12-14. [Now Playing]
How about some straightforward action? That’s what we’re going to get with BULLET TRAIN. Starring Brad Pitt as an assassin stuck on a fast train through Japan with a host of other assassins, BULLET TRAIN looks to be a spry and super-fun jaunt with energy to spare. Plus, it’s nice to watch Brad Pitt have a good time beating people up. [Now Playing]
Thor wasn’t the first Marvel superhero, but he’s going to be the first to get a fourth main movie. And with Taika Waititi returning after the success of THOR: RAGNAROK, we couldn’t be happier. LOVE AND THUNDER promises more laughs, more Guardians of the Galaxy fun, and the long-awaited return of Natalie Portman to the MCU. We can’t wait to see it. [Now Playing]
It’s time for a third visit to the JURRASIC WORLD series. This time the dinosaurs are out of the park, running around and causing chaos in cities across the world. While that’s exciting enough, this third film also helps bridge the gap between the two JURASSIC PARK trilogies by inviting Sam Neill, and Laura Dern back into the fold to join Jeff Goldblum. But let’s face it, we’re here for the dinosaurs. Luckily, it looks like there will be plenty. [Now Playing]
And now, here are more new action movies that will be on the big screen in the months to come, including a few we have been waiting years (even decades) to see!
Spider-Man swings back onto the big screen with an encore presentation of NO WAY HOME, aka the biggest movie of 2021. This time, as the title suggests, there's new footage in the mix, so we'll get to see even more of all three Spider-men. [Opens on September 2]
Viola Davis stars in this action-embellished historical epic which follows the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. This film follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. [Opens on September 16]
Marvel and Sony's web-slinger isn't the only encore movie presentation this season! James Cameron's ground-breaking and record-setting action/adventure movie, AVATAR, comes back to the big screen for the first time in many years. Prepare for the long-awaited sequel, opening in December, by revisiting the original. [Opens on September 23]
Dwayne Johnson makes his long-awaited debut in the DC Universe with this superhero film about a guy who may not be evil but isn’t exactly good either. Johnson has been campaigning to play this role for a long time, so you can bet he’s going to be putting his best foot forward. Who knows, we may end up seeing this character fight Superman someday. [Opens on October 21]
After the death of BLACK PANTHER star Chadwick Boseman, the status of WAKANDA FOREVER seemed very much in question. That mystery remains today. All we really know is that it is slated to come out in November and that BLACK PANTHER writer-director Ryan Coogler has returned. But we don’t need to know much more than that. The first BLACK PANTHER was a milestone and Coogler’s track record is impeccable. This is going to be a must-see film, no matter what it offers. [Opens on November 11]
We don’t know a whole lot about the plot of CREED III, but we do know that star Michael B. Jordan is stepping into the director’s chair with this one, so he’s definitely going to want it to stand out as its own thing. Sylvester Stallone won’t be returning as Rocky Balboa, but it does benefit from a great actor playing Creed’s rival: Jonathan Majors. Whatever Jordan has cooked up for this anticipated sequel, you can bet it will be filled with some great boxing sequences. [Opens on November 23]
After more than a decade, the King of the World, James Cameron, finally returns with AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER. If there was any question about AVATAR’s cultural currency, the film’s recently released first trailer has already broken viewing records in just a couple days of online viewing. So yeah, people are excited for more AVATAR. And they should be. The film, first of several sequels to come, is going to look stunning on the big screen. [December 16]
The first SHAZAM! was a total delight, like the Tom Hanks comedy BIG crossed with Superman. A young boy is granted immense power and the ability to transform into a superhero (played by Zachary Levi) when he shouts “Shazam!” Details on the sequel have yet to be revealed, but we know that Levi will reprise his role as the charming hero – and maybe he’ll bump into Black Adam? The other members of the superhero's family will be back as well. [Opens on December 21]
