For nearly three decades, Sandra Bullock’s been a Hollywood staple—captivating moviegoers with cutting wit and warm sincerity in equal measure, a combination that has more than once earned her “America’s Sweetheart” status.

Born July 26, 1964, in Arlington, Virginia, to a German opera singer mother and American army man father, Bullock’s road to Hollywood could not have been much more straightforward. She took ballet and vocal lessons as a young child, acted in school plays in high school, and then moved to New York City as a young adult. There, she studied acting, and quickly put together a respectable résumé of roles in student films, Off-Broadway plays, and then a few made-for-TV movies. Her first major film appearance involved a supporting role in the 1993 film Demolition Man, alongside Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes. But it was her next part that would truly rocket her to fame.

In 1994, Sandra Bullock co-starred with Keanu Reeves in the runaway action success Speed, in which she famously maneuvers a bus—at a strenuous 55 miles-per-hour—full of fellow hostages through crowded city streets and highways, hoping to save everyone from a fiery doom at the hands of the movie’s villain, played by Dennis Hopper. The movie was a bona fide hit, grossing $350 million, and firmly established Bullock as a person of note in Tinseltown.

From there, she landed starring role after starring role. She was the lead in the rom-com While You Were Sleeping (1995), for which she received her first Golden Globe nomination. Then The Net (1995), a gripping thriller. Before long, the world knew she could not only act, but that she had range, and for the subsequent decade fans would enjoy Bullock in myriad films across a slew of genres: A Time To Kill (1996), Hope Floats (1998), Miss Congeniality (2000), 28 Days (2000), Murder By Numbers (2002), Two Weeks Notice (2002).

In 2004, Bullock co-starred in the ensemble cast that would make up Best Picture winning film Crash. And the Oscar love for Bullock wouldn’t stop there: In 2009, she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Leigh Anne Tuohy, the adoptive mother of real-life NFL tackle Michael Oher, in the biopic The Blind Side. Oddly enough, exactly one night before she won the Oscar, she “won” a Razzie for her role in All About Steve. Hey—you can’t win ‘em all, but, if you’re Sandra Bullock…actually, maybe you can.

Between the aughts and today, Bullock’s not only been a consistent A-lister—starring in movies like The Proposal (2009), Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011), The Heat (2013), Gravity (2013), Bird Box (2018), and Ocean’s 8 (2018)—but also a noted philanthropist, producer and mother.

After two 2022 releases—The Unforgivable and The Lost City—Bullock publicly stated that she planned to take a break from acting. This comes as no surprise for the actor who’s been notably discerning about which roles she’ll take over the last couple of decades. But we’re sure we’ll see her again on the big screen—in space, behind the wheel, on the case, or head over heels—before long.
