Scream VI: Everything We Know

7/14/2022 • 4 min read

(Updated 03/07/2023)

After the success of SCREAM, a.k.a. SCREAM 5, which helped open the movie year of 2022, it was all but certain that we would see another movie in the franchise. Fans are certainly eager for more, and there are survivors of the latest events in Woodsboro who need closure.

Thankfully, SCREAM VI is coming, and fans won’t have to endure another 10-year wait. The next SCREAM installment opens in March. With a mixture of returning actors and new stars, the movie will take the characters to new locations. Here's the final SCREAM VI trailer and everything we know about the movie so far.

When Can We See Scream VI?

SCREAM VI opens exclusively in movie theatres on March 10. That puts it in theatres just 14 months after the release of the last movie, which is an impressive turnaround!

Watch The New Scream VI Trailer

The first SCREAM VI teaser trailer was set almost entirely on the subway, which is a good way to announce that the series has made the move to New York. We saw multiple people costumed as horror icons. Someone is dressed as Samara Weaving's character from READY OR NOT. There's a Babadook — and multiple Ghostface costumes.

The second SCREAM VI trailer gave us a lot more to look at. There was Ghostface with a shotgun, which incited conversation among fans even though this is hardly the first time we've seen Ghostface use a firearm. We get to see returning characters and a lot of chaos as the dense, huge city offers Ghostface a frighteningly large hunting ground.

This final SCREAM VI trailer features glowing pullquotes from critics, and also suggests that Gale Weathers might not escape Ghostface this time. That's not a spoiler! We haven't seen the movie, but it's certainly a big takeaway from the trailer. Or, at least, it's what the trailer wants us to be afraid of.

The Story in Scream VI

Literally everyone was stabbed in 2022's SCREAM but four new characters survived: Sam and her sister Tara, and the twins Mindy and Chad. They all relocate to New York City, hoping to make a fresh start, far from Woodsboro. (Sam and Tara tried that in the last movie but didn't quite make it.) But Ghostface shows up, which makes this kind of like FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN. (There's even someone dressed like Jason Voorhees in one sequence.)

But the question is: Who is this Ghostface? The new SCREAM VI trailer shows a Batman-like hideout that looks like it is part museum and part lair. "You've never met one like me," this Ghostface says — so who is under the mask, and what made this person adopt the Ghostface persona in the first place?

Is the Original Cast in Scream 6?

Without spoiling anything for those who haven't seen the most recent movie, some cast members could potentially reprise their roles; some could not. Courtney Cox is definitely in the cast.

Neve Campbell, however, has bowed out of SCREAM 6, making this the first movie in the series without her character Sidney Prescott. She said, "Sadly I won't be making the next Scream film. As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It's been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."

But there is one upside: Some of the biggest casting news for longtime fans is that Hayden Panettiere returns as Kirby Reed from SCREAM 4. Kirby seemingly died in 4 but last year's movie revealed that she pulled through. As one of the best characters to be introduced in any of the sequels, it's great that Kirby is back.

The Rest of the Scream VI Cast

Samara Weaving, who was eyed for a role in the last movie, has joined the cast. (And that makes seeing someone dressed as her READY OR NOT character in the trailer even more fun.) Tony Revolori (SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME) is on board, as well.

They're joined by Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega from the most recent movie. Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, and Henry Czerny are in the cast, too.

The Return of Red Right Hand?

Every SCREAM movie except for the fourth has used the song "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Cave even rewrote the song to create a unique version for the end credits of SCREAM 3. In 2022's SCREAM, the song got one of its best uses, with the tune's signature bell sounding to indicate the death of one character.

So will "Red Right Hand" be heard in SCREAM VI? We hope so! So far the only confirmed song in the soundtrack is Demi Lovato's new song, "Still Alive," the video for which you can see above.

Scream's Returning Directors

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the previous SCREAM, picking up where the late Wes Craven left off. They're back in the director's chair(s) for this movie, too, which is a nice additional layer of continuity. The script is by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

SCREAM VI opens on March 10.
