Movies to See in Theatres on Labor Day Weekend

7/8/2022 • 4 min read

(Updated 07/28/2023)

Summer ends with Labor Day, and the weekend is a transition point between the big movies of the hottest season and the more character-focused fare of fall. (This year, of course, the two biggest summer movies, BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER, were also character studies, which was a surprising treat!)

Labor Day weekend is a good time to catch up on recent hits and to see a few new titles. This year, Denzel Washington returns as the Equalizer, and the raunchy comedy BOTTOMS proves that there are still new avenues for funny movies to explore. Here are the new movies to watch in theatres on Labor Day weekend 2023.

When Is Labor Day 2023?

This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 4. That means that the new movies opening for Labor Day weekend this year are primarily coming to theatres on September 1.

If you want to give an end-of-summer gift to friends or family, you can pick up one of our convenient gift cards. Or, to give something special to regular movie-goers, set them up with a Movie Club membership for a gift that keeps giving all year long!

Labor Day 2023 — New Movies to Watch in Theatres

Three big movies are opening for Labor Day this year.

The Equalizer 3The Equalizer 3 | Cinemark

Denzel Washignton returns as Robert McCall. He's in Italy trying to put his old life behind him, but a run-in with the Sicilian Mafia pulls McCall back into a world of violence.

BottomsBottoms | Cinemark

PJ and Josie have the hots for their school's cheerleaders, so they hatch an obvious plan: Start a fight club so they have a reason to hang out with the cheerleaders. You know, like we all did, right? But when their plan actually works, the girls realize they've created the structure for their own downfall.

The Good MotherThe Good Mother | Cinemark

The Good Mother follows journalist Marissa Bennings (Swank) who, after the murder of her estranged son, forms an unlikely alliance with his pregnant girlfriend Paige (Cooke) to track down those responsible for his death. Together they confront a world of corruption and drugs in the underbelly of a small city in upstate New York.

Still in Theatres

In addition to the movies opening on Labor Day weekend in 2023, there are great films still in theatres from earlier in the summer!

You can see recent releases like GRAN TURISMO: BASED ON A TRUE STORY, THE HILL, and RETRIBUTION. And then there are the high-flying superhero hijinks of BLUE BEETLE, the high-kicking animation of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM, and the adult animal comedy STRAYS. For the horror hounds, we've got THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER and MEG 2: THE TRENCH.

And mega-hits BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER are still playing, too, so you can see them again — or for the first time if you've been too busy to catch either one yet!
