All the Reasons We're Excited for January 2021 Movies

1/3/2021 • 3 min read

Have you ever been so excited for it to be January? After a year for which "turbulent" seems like an almost comical understatement, the dawning of a new year is the new beginning we've been ready for.

We're looking forward to a full year of movies, and things get started right away with a powerful drama, a thriller with a top-notch cast, and an action favorite. Here are the reasons we're excited about going to the movies in January 2021!

Liam Neeson Is Back in Action

It's been more than a decade since Liam Neeson became an action icon thanks to TAKEN, and we still love every new movie that pits him against bad guys. In THE MARKSMAN, directed by Clint Eastwood associate Robert Lorenz (TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE) he plays an Arizona ranger who is desperately trying to maintain his land on the Mexico border. Oh, and he's also a former Marine marksman (hence the title) who is still pretty handy with a long gun. When he saves an 11-year old migrant from cartel killers, Neeson's rancher dusts off his rifle to keep the cartel far away from the kid.

THE MARKSMAN opens on January 15.

Denzel Washington Returns

Denzel Washington hasn't been in a movie since THE EQUALIZER 2 in 2018, but this year we get to see him twice! He's one of three big names in this thriller, and Washington plays Deke, a burnt-out and not exactly rule-bound sheriff's deputy in central California. After he ends up back in LA to help big-time LA Sheriff's Department detective Baxter (Rami Malek) catch a serial killer, old mistakes cast shadows across the present day. Jared Leto stars as a key suspect, but the trailer wants us to think Denzel might have committed the murders. Is there a lot more going on than that? Probably!

(Oh, and by the way, Washington's next 2021 movie is THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH, which comes from director Joel Coen. That one doesn't have a release date yet.)

THE LITTLE THINGS opens on January 29.

Stanley Tucci Shines

Prepare to shed buckets of tears as you marvel at two powerful performances from Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth. The actors play Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci), who have been partners for twenty years. We join up with the pair as they travel through England, reconnecting with old friends and family. But this is not a happy couple; Tusker has been diagnosed with young-onset dementia, and his illness is the catalyst for other secrets and private plans to come to light. Watching two people figure out their relationship can be difficult, but with actors as good as Firth and Tucci are here, the experience is special.

SUPERNOVA opens on January 29.
