What is 70mm projection?
Significantly larger than its more common 35mm counterpart, 70mm film is known for its capacity to capture stunning image and sound quality. When projected, it provides moviegoers with unmatched visuals, made possible by a wide Dynamic Range—the brightest whites, deepest blacks, and richest colors. The film also allows for higher-quality sound, as 70mm prints feature soundtracks of the highest-fidelity digital audio available with any film gauge. This combination of vividity and clarity has made 70mm the chosen medium for classic masterpieces like Ben-Hur,2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Sound of Music, as well as recent stunners like Oppenheimer, Sinners, and One Battle After Another.
Put simply, 70mm film projection is special. Only a handful of movies are shot on 70mm film, and they usually see extremely limited theatre runs—not every theatre has the ability to offer screenings in 70mm (see below for a list of locations that have Cinemark 70mm or Cinemark IMAX 70mm).
Why Do I Want to See a Movie in 70mm?
Seeing is believing. According to Brady Corbet, who directed The Brutalist, the difference between seeing a movie in standard format and in 70mm is like the difference between seeing a lithograph of the Mona Lisa and seeing it person.
